2nd Attempt

CNY Eve Bread Pudding

For Shwang, after his repeated requests for a picture. Finally found time to bake amidst spring cleaning and the hospital.

n.b: Non-raisins portion for Sis.

A Healthy Mind

Unfortunately, yes; the people we care for most are not good for us when we are ill.

In My Solitude

When the Boy is away, I am more conscious of myself - my solitude, my thoughts and my actions.

I take public transport and am aware that I am a stranger amongst the throes of people around me. I sit and read a book, plug in my iPod and get locked in my world. My world. Reading with relish - I am alone amongst crowds in my Own world.

I walk each step along Orchard Rd, aware that I've not done so for the longest time. I stare at twinkly lights and feel the ground on my feet. I share conversation with friends and retrace steps I've gone with him.

I avoid the cabs and meticulously take the train home. Book, music and solitude. I relish the sights and sounds, I move away from presumably sleazy men and pull up my top and pull down my skirt. I worry for myself, because I know he worries for me.

In my solitude, I miss you.

In relishing my solitude, I miss you more.

The Rate of Life

Lately, I've been struck with the realisation that I will be turning 26 this year. With this new found revelation comes mock panic attacks that friends find impossible to quell.

What can lainey do now that she is finally growing old? Stock up on the anti-ageing products?

I do find it ironic that I've progressed from a girl obsessed with death and dying - to a girl petrified of growing old / up?

But I just have to live life to the best in the meantime, right?

Addendum: I don't say live life to the fullest because I doubt my weak constitution allows me to live life to the fullest, just the best I can possibly manage.

Food Posting

I am to start a food blog with the Boy, but until we decide what kinda food blog it's gonna be, I shall post our gastronomical adventures here.

Shimizu Japanese Restaurant, 6 Jan (3rd Month Anniversary)

I extracted my wisdom tooth a few days before and was sick of porridge and the "water diet". Those who know me personally will know that I naturally crave for hotpot (in any form) whenever I need comfort food. So I asked for the Japanese hotpot and since Keyagi was undergoing renovation, the Boy found this little restaurant in the middle of nowhere for us to go to.

For appetiser, we had steamed bean curd with century egg. It was fantabulous!

So more but tasty!

Then came the nabe (hot pot) with sliced raw beef.

too little beef for two red meat enthusiasts!

lots of mushrooms and free flow of soup, good for me!

We had a sashimi platter but the Boy ain't too keen on raw fish, it gets kinda lonely eating when there's no one to fight for food with.

I think I'm contributing to the over-fishing

It was a good dining experience all in all. Service was prompt and swift. But the toilets at the country club were nasty. I guess I will visit the restaurant again, but I will sure remember to use the toilet elsewhere first!

Language of The Heart

Going to Hong Kong and the various Chinatowns in North America has always been an emotional experience for me. It's like going home, going home to my childhood. I probably learned/heard Cantonese way before I started Mandarin in Kindergarten. My childhood was filled with Cantonese and its expletives, exaggerated expressions of shock and concern and constant jibbering in the dialect at the various nooks of Singapore's Chinatown and more so, People's Park.

Walking along the dirty streets of Chinatowns and Hong Kong, and listening to Cantonese (not English) as the common language fills me with a sense of utmost nostalgia. I always miss my grandpa when I'm away.

So I guess I'm a little concerned - concerned when this article reads that the langauge of my memory, my childhood, is fading and surpassed by the language of my peril - Mandarin. I sure hope not.

2005 Stock-Take

For the obligatory stock-take, so that life can be neater.

2005

I got a new job (one that I'm still at - 9 months and still going!),
have a stable paycheck, worked out my finances and spent a huge chunk of money on holidays, gadgets and family.

Places visited:

1) Jakarta
2) Java : Borobudur, rice terraces, Prambawan, the wonders of the
Southeast Asian Landscape
3) Bangkok : For Bangkok International Film Festival, dowdy street
food, spa and the urban landscape
4) Bintan : The beach, the sun, great music, booze and fabulous company
5) Hong Kong (2x) : I loved it so much I went twice - and I can't wait for my third trip!) : Loved it for the energy, the countryside, the colourful city it is and the gracious and friendly people. Love it for the food, the shopping, the nostalgia and oh well, for how three dimensional it is.
6) Guangzhou (2x) : For love, food and a taste of the new China
7) Macau: Fabulous food and wine, quaint streets, and old world charm

So it was all Asia....

Gadgets bought:

1) iPod (and we've never since been separated)
2) a Fujitsu Lifebook (my most expensive personal purchase ever!)

Milestones:

1) A job I enjoy
2) Broke a heart
3) Fell in love
4) love my family
5) Watching Rum (The Golden Retriever) grow up
6) Realised I can actually be happy
7) Ran 10km at Standard Chartered Marathon
8) Watched CSI Seasons 1 - 5 (hee)
9) Discovered a lot of new friends, good music and fabulous reasons for living.
10) Church and loving God.

Unfortunately, the year went by like a whirlwind and I forgot to record memories, books read, music discovered and films watched.

Hopes for 2006

1) To read more and record reads (read before sleep every night)
2) Settle into church
3) Watch more films and record thoughts.
4) Music - more music
5) Run the half Marathon
6) To lose weight (of course I will always have that as my new year
hope)
7) Pick up French again.
8) Travel more! (The US, Japan, Maldives and perhaps, China again?)
9) Start a fixed account.
10) Be nicer to the Boy. :P
